From Stephanie:
"I am totally failing on having FHE at our house. Diego will be 3 next month, and I feel like it's time to try to get into a routine. I'm wondering if anyone has any quick and easy FHE ideas, or books that they've enjoyed with this age group. One cool idea I've heard is to use the Gospel Art Picture kit which have quick summaries on the back of the pictures. Then you just pull out a picture, read the quick summary, and you're done. I love this idea because it doesn't involve much planning. The kit is $35 or something though, and I haven't splurged for it yet. Any other great ideas out there?"

We do collages using old Friend and Ensign magazines. They each get a set of scissors, some paper and they go to town! It is sooo simple, yet we all have a blast doing it. Once, Cora cut the eyes of different prophets out and glued them all onto one piece of paper. That was a little bit creepy. Like all of the apostles were watching me! Hopefully they didn't mind the glutenous ending, because we had ice cream!
Someone sent me a word document book with FHE Evening ideas for the whole year. I will e-mail it to Amber, so if anyone wants it you can ask her for it. Also, some additional ideas are teaching lessons from the Nursery or other Primary manuals. The back page of the Friend has FHE ideas. Also we sometimes just read an article from the Friend and talk about it. Don't forget about the FHE manual. It also had ideas and stories for young children with each lesson. There are also some good websites with a lot of ideas. Mormon Life and LDS Splash are good ones.
I'm all about keeping things simple. We don't plan a lot for FHE because attention spans are short! Often it's more like a talent show from giving assignments-starting with the song. For the lesson we'll usually pull a poem or something out of the Friend magazine and get the kids' input. Bean bags work great to take turns. I frequent the Gospel Art Picture Kit, too. It's worth the money and the kids get excited to be the "picture holders." We love following with a fun activity-it's the end reward!
We have been using the new Nursery Manual. It is made specifically for very young children. You can buy it for $5.50 or you can access all the lessons online at lds.org. Also, there is a new Gospel Art Book that is only $3.50. A cheaper way to get lots of pictures. (Although the stories aren't written on the back like they are in the kit.)
I just got that Gospel Art book, and we love it. Another thing we like to do is teach the kids new primary songs. Last week, we built Nephi's ship. The Living Scriptures workbooks have lots of fun ideas, but the videos are so darn expensive. We use the books my mom has saved. We've also spent time coloring Bingo games, matching games, etc that all have to do with church, which we will use for future FHEs once I got around to laminating them all. Oh, one more... the SPIT WAD GAME. I was once in charge of FHE at Troy's family's house. I made a memory game on a poster board. Every one got a piece of paper and a straw and had to spit a wad and land it on the squares to get a question. The boys seemed to like that one :)
PS- Amber, I'd love that book Abbie was talking about!
Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful!
