Reading to the Kids

Sometimes I get tired of reading the same books to my kids at night. And I can't believe how many books we bring home from the library are just awful to read and not written well (in my opinion). Just because it rhymes and has a bunny for a main character doesn't make it a good book!
Do you have children's book favorites that I can look for next time I go to the library?

We love the little critter books by Mercer Meyer, but I don't know if your oldest would love them.

Okay...I was wondering this earlier in the week. I looked on Amazon and came across a book called The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease. He talks about why it is SO important to read to your kids and he give suggestions. So tomorrow I will be going to pick this book up from the library for some good advice :)

I love children's literature and I consider myself somewhat of an expert on them. Some of our favorites are:

Dr. De Soto
Magic School Bus (obviously)
Skippyjon Jones (really fun)
Fanny's Dream
Madeline (the books)
Olivia
The kissing hand (cute not a great vocabulary but still tender)
King Bidgood
Fish is Fish
The Tickle Octopus

These are just a few and everyone's tastes are different but We really enjoy these in our home. I don't know how Tyson will feel about some of the girl ones but Eliza will begin to love them. I would say find books with great vocabulary that spark conversation.
