Road Trip
Just wanted to let you know I'm not neglecting the blog. I have just been pretty busy with moving and visiting family. I am currently in the middle of a 2 1/2 week trip all the way across the country to our new home in the east. And yes, we are driving with our children the whole way. Its going to be more than 3000 miles because we are not exactly taking the quickest route as we will be visiting family along the way. So this brings me to the question I would like to ask all you resourceful people out there. Is there anything you do to make road trips with small children more fun? Of course, I have the DVD player and some coloring books and small toys and plenty of snacks but if you know of anything else that can help I would very much appreciate it. I think after 50+ hours in the car we might run out of things to do!

Wow. I have no suggestions but wanted to wish you good luck! We're going to miss you guys!
My mom would make a bingo/ I spy card!! So one square might be " a Flock of birds" or a "Utah license plate" things like that (things you would see on your trip)!! THen who ever got bingo got a little prize!! Also my sister in law makes pretend binoculars out of old paper towel rolls and some string and glue!! Then she buys stickers to let them decorate them! Maybe by doing both activities together you could have a grand old time!! OK OK a better time
I saw some fun looking games on a blog recently. Check them out at http://theidearoom.blogspot.com/search/label/Idea%20Room%20Store. Also, we like to listen to children's books on c.d.
We love playing "I Spy"-even Elisabeth. And couting things-like oil wells or train cars. Time passes best when the kids are intrigued to look out the window. It's fun to tell an on-going story everyone contributes to. Good luck! I'm sure you'll exhaust every option.
These may not be new ideas, but here are some things I've done to pass the time away in the car!
I've allowed each girl to have a backpack near them in the car. Each day hide a new game, movie, activity, toy, etc., in their backpack, In addition to a few favorite small toys and lots of books! On our last trip, my brother gave us an old computer type game (it's kind of big), 3-year old loved it, it kept her entertained the whole time, so we brought it along with us this time.
Card games, this is always fun if you can reach the kids easily.
Magnetic storyboards and childrens games (like 20Q or even magnatized shoots and ladders, candyland, etc)
Bubbles, the non-spillable kind, always good for a laugh.
This last trip (we just got home yesterday), we stopped at Walmart and I bought them a .15 notebook, I wrote down all the exciting places and people we visited the past few weeks and created a travel journal. Each page had a different thing we had done or someone we had visited. I told them to write or draw what they remember about that activity. I wish I'd done this along the whole trip and just added it as we went along, maybe they would have finished more!
Books on tape OR reading (hard to do in a mini van when someone is clear in the back though)
Oragami, maybe they are too young to do it themselves, but they may be excited by something you create. (I am exhausted by all the entertaining that needs to go on on trips, I am thankful for the movie to give me a break!)
Once again age may be the difference, a friend gave the older girls their own weaving loom, hours of entertainment.
A new treat, I like to look for treats or drinks they've never had before, or something they rarely have.
Change where they sit in the car after a few days (if that works well for everything else).
It may be too late now, but I printed a lot of pictures (of Texas things to show people) and I worked on the mini scrapbook in the car, the girls were so excited to see it when it was finished. It would be fun to do that with pictures from your old home and maybe of some of where you're moving to if you have them!
