I just received a request from a friend to ask about sleep. You may recall a while back I did a post about how much sleep our kids getting (Up With the Birds) but this is an inquiry into how much sleep YOU are getting.
"How much sleep are we getting? Not how much is necessary from a medical standpoint, but how much are we really getting? And are we functioning well with the amount we are getting? I am just curious - because with kiddies getting up in the night, we often don't get ideal sleep - and it would just be interesting to know what other people are getting out there and how that is working out for them. Maybe if we have a bad night and we know others survive with little sleep too, it will give us some motivation! Or maybe people can share tips for having energy when they have gotten little sleep."
I also have done a post about how to get more energy (But...yawn...I'm too tired) if you want to check it out.
But mostly PLEASE drop us a comment and let us know about your sleep and how you deal with it!

With three small kids and a husband always traveling, my sleep gets comprimised. My greatest help is to get outside for a daily dose of fresh air-regardless of weather. It helps me feel refreshed to keep moving...until bedtime. The kids appreciate the outing, too.
I sleep so much better when I take the time to get good exercise for myself. I always notice a huge difference if I haven't been to the the gym in a while.
On a good night, I get between 7 or 8 hours of sleep a night. With three kids though (my youngest just turned 1), I frequently don't get to sleep through the night uninterrupted. When my youngest was a newborn, he was awful and would stay awake half the night and I couldn't sleep much during the day because I was taking care of my other boys. I barely got enough sleep then to survive (some nights only 5 hours total, usually split into two or three sections). Luckily that stage is over now and I feel like a real person again. I make it a priority to try to get to bed on time.
I usually sleep 7-8 hours a night. I go to bed between 10:30 and 11:00 and wake up at 6:30 to exercise. The funny thing I've noticed is that when I sleep in (7:30 :)) I'm more tired than when I get up and exercise. It's amazing how it energizes me and sets me up to make good food choices. Plus, I get so much more done getting off to a good start. I'm with you on afternoon book time. I always nod off while reading to the kids. It's so embarassing!
Our new baby has been a pretty good sleeper and I am usually getting 7-8 hours sleep. However, if he is having a bad night and I get closer to 4-5 hours I feel totally thrashed! its crazy, because in college I swear I was totally fine with 4-5 hours. I guess I am just getting old! thanks for the tips - I need to make exercise a bigger priority and make it a point to have an outing like Alisa suggested. Thanks!
I get about 8 hours of sleep now-Finally!!! My kids are 5 and 2 though so we rarely have to get up in the middle of the night anymore. My kids do wake up really early but as long as I go to bed on time, I do ok. When I have a new baby, I seriously go to sleep around 9. Its the only way to come close to getting enough sleep.
I agree with those who talk about exercising. I do sleep so much deeper when I exercise. I still wake up to the kids when they need me but I don't wake up to every tiny noise and then lie awake trying to go back to sleep. It does help a lot. Even though I get plenty of sleep at night, I still get pretty tired in the afternoon. I usually take a 15 min snooze (when I can) and it seems to do the trick.
